Adventures in Strathcona Park.

In the summer of 2000 I was looking through a hiking book for Vancouver Island. On one of the pages was a picture of Schjelderup Lake. I had no idea there was a Schjelderup Lake and set out to figure out why it was named. I discovered it was named after Col Roger Schjelderup, my fathers brother. Of course, my next thought was to visit it, but it appeared to be in the middle of
Strathcona park -- clearly not a day hike.

One thing led to another and an expedition was planned for the summer of 2002 for a number of Schjelderups to hike into the lake, and for the others to fly in via Helicopter to place some memorial for Roger Schjelderup at the lake. I made a DVD covering our adventures, and have posted some pictures on this web site. It was really an adventure, and it started a tradition for my brother Roger and me that we want to continue until I'm no longer able to backpack.

Thus the
2002 Schjelderup Lake expedition was followed by the 2003 attempt on the Golden Hinde (we got within a few hundred feet of the top, ARGH!) the 2004 assent of the Comox Glacier and the 2005 adventure of boating into Marble Meadows and hiking into Schjelderup Lake via the original route.

In 2006 Roger and Bill reach the TOP of the Golden Hinde traveling from Elk River across the park to the base camp of the Hinde, climb the Golden Hinde then spend 1/2 day at Schjelderup Lake relaxing before the grind back to the car.

In 2007, the excessive snow and bad weather kept us up on
Phillips Ridge. It was fun, but not our regular adventure.

Roger the Bill’s Annual Backpacking Trip for Summer 2008, Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, Day 8
We started at the Westmin Mine and walked across to the Elk River Exit via Burman Lake.

2009, Bill returns to Schjelderup Lake without Roger - until the very end.

2010,
Bill & Roger see how Patrick will do on a shorter trip. He did GREAT!
